Born in 1910 to Dr. Will Long and Blanche White, Margaret Long Martin graduated from Langston High School in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas in 1928. She was the first African American from Hot Springs to win the Elks National Oratorical contest and won a scholarship to Knoxville College in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. Martin went on to be a pioneer in education as a teacher at Langston High School for 16 years, Principal of Douglas School from 1949-1967, the first African American sent to Europe by the United States to study education in 1964 and the first African American woman elected to the Hot Springs School District in 1972. Additionally, she was the first African American in the Peace Corps to head the Teachers Corps and she was the first African American Justice of the Peace for Garland County in 1972.
